Used OEM Jeep ABS Pump & Module — Buyer's Guide & Replacement Cost

Published by GreenGears Auto | 7 min read | Jeep ABS Pump & Module Buyer's Guide

An ABS light that won't turn off, a brake pedal that pulses at a stop, or a dealer quote north of $2,000 for a "hydraulic control unit" usually comes back to one part on a Jeep: the ABS pump and module assembly. This guide covers what the ABS pump actually does, the failure patterns specific to Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and Compass/Patriot models, and what a genuine used OEM replacement really costs versus new or aftermarket.

What Does the ABS Pump Actually Do?

The ABS pump — more precisely the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) with its integrated ABS module — sits between the brake master cylinder and the wheels. It uses a motor-driven pump and a set of solenoid valves to rapidly modulate brake pressure at each wheel, which is what keeps the wheels from locking up under hard braking and is also the foundation for traction control and electronic stability control on later Jeeps. On most Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Compass/Patriot models this is one sealed assembly bolted to the frame or firewall, wired directly into the brake lines, so when it fails, the fix is a full unit swap rather than a component-level repair.

Because the ABS module also feeds data to traction control and, on some trims, stability and hill-descent systems, a failing pump rarely shows up as just one warning light. It's common to see the ABS light, traction control light, and brake system light illuminate together, which can make the problem look more complicated than it is.

Common Jeep ABS Pump Failure Points

ABS and Traction Control Lights On Together

An internal fault in the module's control circuitry — often from age or a failing pump motor — typically lights up both the ABS and traction control indicators at once, even when the wheel speed sensors themselves are fine.

Corroded Connectors (Wrangler Especially)

Wranglers see more water, mud, and road salt exposure than most vehicles, and the ABS module's electrical connector sits low and exposed. Corrosion here can mimic an internal module failure and cause intermittent, hard-to-diagnose ABS faults.

Pulsating or Hard Brake Pedal

A worn pump motor or sticking internal valve can cause the pedal to pulse on its own during normal, non-panic braking, or make the pedal feel unusually firm — both signs the HCU is no longer cycling pressure correctly.

ABS Activating on Dry Pavement

If the ABS system engages (a rapid pulsing at the pedal) under light, normal braking on dry roads, that usually points to an internal valve stuck open in the hydraulic control unit rather than a wheel speed sensor issue.

Misdiagnosis vs. Wheel Speed Sensors

A large share of ABS codes on Jeeps are actually wheel speed sensor or wiring faults, not the pump itself. Replacing the whole HCU without ruling this out first is the single most common — and most expensive — mistake owners make.

⚠️ Scan and confirm before you buy a pump. Pull the actual ABS fault codes with a scan tool before ordering a replacement HCU. Wheel speed sensor codes, damaged tone rings, and wiring faults are far cheaper to fix and are frequently the real cause of an illuminated ABS light — don't replace the pump on a hunch.

Used OEM vs New vs Aftermarket — Cost Comparison

Option Typical Cost Key Consideration
New OEM (Dealer) $1,200 – $2,500+ Highest cost by far, plus the module typically needs dealer-level programming/coding to the vehicle after install.
Used OEM (GreenGears) $265 – $1,069 Genuine factory HCU pulled from a low-mileage donor, tested for fault codes, with year/trim/drivetrain fitment confirmed by VIN.
Remanufactured $450 – $900 Core-exchange rebuilt units are fairly common for Jeep ABS modules; check warranty terms and expected programming requirements.
Aftermarket Limited availability New aftermarket HCUs are uncommon for late-model Jeeps due to the programming and coding requirements — used OEM and reman dominate this category.
🔧 Plan for programming and a proper bleed. Many Jeep ABS/HCU replacements need the module flashed or coded to the vehicle after install, plus a full brake system bleed using the correct procedure (some require a scan tool cycle, not just manual bleeding). Confirm your shop can handle this before you swap the part.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

  • VIN matches your vehicle so we can confirm the exact year, trim, and correct HCU part number
  • ABS fault codes have been scanned and wheel speed sensors/wiring ruled out first
  • 2WD vs. 4WD configuration, since Jeep ABS modules commonly differ by drivetrain
  • Connector type and pin count match your model year — these changed across generations
  • Whether your vehicle requires post-install module programming or coding
  • Traction control, ESC, or hill-descent functions integrated into the same unit on your trim
  • Brake fluid type and bleed procedure required after installation
