Hydraulic vs. Electric Power Steering — Which Do You Need?

Before ordering, it's important to confirm which type of power steering system your vehicle uses. The two systems are completely different components and are not interchangeable.

💧 Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS)

Uses a belt-driven pump to pressurise fluid and assist steering. Found on most vehicles built before 2012, and many trucks and SUVs through to the present. Symptoms of failure: whining on turns, stiff low-speed steering, fluid leak under the front of the vehicle. You need a replacement pump from this collection.

⚡ Electric Power Steering (EPS)

Uses an electric motor in the steering column or rack — no fluid, no belt-driven pump. Found on most passenger cars built after 2012. Symptoms of failure: intermittent loss of assist, EPS warning light, heavy steering, fault codes C0460–C0476. You need an EPS column motor or rack unit from this collection.

⚠️ If Your Vehicle Has EPS, There Is No Pump to Replace A common and costly mistake is ordering a hydraulic power steering pump for a vehicle with electric power steering. Check your owner's manual or look under the bonnet — if there is no power steering fluid reservoir, your vehicle has EPS. Pull OBD-II fault codes first: codes in the C04xx range point to specific EPS components and save significant diagnostic time.

Why Buy a Used OEM Power Steering Component?

Budget aftermarket power steering pumps and EPS units have a well-documented failure rate — whining immediately after installation, premature seal failure, and noise that returns within 20,000 miles are among the most common complaints on auto repair forums. The root cause is simple: aftermarket pump housings are cast to lower tolerances than OEM, creating internal clearances that generate noise and accelerate wear from the first start.

A used OEM pump from a 50,000-mile donor vehicle has already proven its ability to run quietly and leak-free for real-world highway service. That is a performance record no budget aftermarket unit can offer. At GreenGears Auto, used OEM power steering components cost 50–60% less than new OEM — without the quality compromise of aftermarket alternatives.

🔍 Seal Integrity Inspected

Every hydraulic pump is checked for shaft seal weeping and housing cracks before listing. Any unit showing external fluid residue is rejected from our inventory regardless of mileage.

⚙️ Shaft & Bearing Checked

Pulley shaft smoothness and bearing condition are verified by hand rotation on every pump. Roughness or wobble disqualifies a unit before it reaches our listings.

📋 Mileage Documented

Donor vehicle mileage is verified and recorded on every listing. Most units come from accident-damaged low-mileage donors whose steering systems were untouched by the collision.

Popular Power Steering Applications We Stock

Toyota & Lexus Hydraulic Pumps

Toyota Camry, RAV4, 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Lexus GX and LX hydraulic power steering pumps. Toyota's HPS pumps are among the most durable in the mass market — regularly reaching 150,000–180,000 miles without failure when the correct fluid is used. Used OEM Toyota pumps from low-mileage donors are the best-value option in this category.

Honda & Acura Hydraulic Pumps

Honda Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, and Acura MDX hydraulic power steering pumps. Reliable and very well-represented in the used market due to Honda's large US fleet. Always source from donors with no evidence of external seal weeping.

Ford Hydraulic Pumps

Ford F-150, Explorer, Expedition, and Ranger hydraulic power steering pumps. Ford's truck and SUV units are heavy-duty and long-lived. Always use Ford-spec Mercon power steering fluid — generic substitutes degrade internal seals faster on Ford applications.

GM Hydraulic Pumps

Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Malibu, Impala, and GMC Sierra and Yukon hydraulic power steering pumps. Well-built and widely available from GM's large accident-donor fleet.

Electric Power Steering Column Motors & Modules

EPS column motor assemblies for Subaru WRX/STI, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Prius, Honda Fit, Mazda 3, and many other platforms that transitioned to electric power steering from 2008 onwards. EPS units must be matched to your exact year, make, model, and trim — provide your VIN when ordering.

Honda Accord / CR-V / Pilot HPS pump $55–$160 $160–$420 Hydraulic
Ford F-150 / Explorer / Expedition HPS pump $65–$200 $200–$540 Hydraulic
Chevrolet Silverado / Tahoe HPS pump $60–$180 $180–$460 Hydraulic
Jeep Grand Cherokee / Wrangler HPS pump $70–$200 $200–$520 Hydraulic

Toyota Prius / Honda Fit EPS unit $100–$240 $320–$800 Electric

Before You Order — Key Checks

  • Confirm HPS vs. EPS first: Check for a power steering fluid reservoir under the bonnet. No reservoir = electric power steering. Do not order a hydraulic pump for an EPS vehicle.
  • For hydraulic pumps — confirm engine size: Many platforms have engine-specific pump variants. A 2.4L and 3.5L version of the same model often use different pumps with different pulley sizes and bracket configurations.
  • For EPS units — provide your full VIN: Assist calibration, torque sensor sensitivity, and connector configurations can differ between trim levels within the same model year.
  • Always flush the system on pump replacement: A failing hydraulic pump sends metal debris through the entire system. Install a clean pump into a contaminated circuit and it will fail prematurely for the same reason.
  • Use only OEM-specified fluid: Toyota PSF, Honda PSF-S, Ford Mercon, GM Power Steering Fluid. Substituting generic ATF degrades internal seals on modern HPS systems.
🔧 Check the Fluid Level Before Replacing the Pump Low power steering fluid is the most common cause of whining and stiff steering — and it costs nothing to check. Top up with the correct OEM-spec fluid first. If symptoms resolve, you have a leak elsewhere in the system, not a failed pump. If the reservoir empties repeatedly, trace the leak source before ordering a replacement.
